Owl Cupcakes for Valentines Day

All you need is love, love, love is all you need.

Happy Valentines Day!  I hope you are spending it with the ones you love.

I realise that not everyone celebrates or approves of Valentines Day, but I have always liked it, even as a mere bystander (which I have been mostly).  A day to celebrate love is a wonderful idea to me.

To celebrate this year, I have once again amalgamated the Valentine theme with my fascination for owls, and made Owl Cupcakes with a Valentine twist.  Again turning to Google, I found these cupcakes, which are a twist on these ones that have been made dozens of times by various bloggers.

I put my own spin on them by giving the owls heart-shaped pupils made out of strawberry sour straps. The eyes and ears are, of course, Oreos. To separate the Oreos, I used the tip to twist them apart, and smoothed over the icing following separation.   It was a bit of a nightmare cutting the Oreos in half for the ears, and in the end, I had just enough and no more.  The beaks are raspberry flavoured M&Ms, which are new to me and so delicious that quite a few went to the chef.

For the base cupcakes, I used the white chocolate mud cupcake recipe from the Australian Womens Weekly Cupcake book, which is online here, and coloured light pink.  The frosting is the Primrose Bakery Vanilla Buttercream, dyed pink.

I didn't have enough Oreos in a box to make all 11 cupcakes as owls, so I just decorated the 4 of them with sugar hearts:

Happy Valentines Day!

brilliant - I made these cupcakes last year and loved them but they were so dark - I love your pink twist and especially the heart shaped eyes

When Valentine's Day provides an excuse for cupcakes like these, what is not to like (love!)? :)

Oh they are so cute, I love the hearts too. I think I might bake these for my friend who likes owls, but without the hearts!!

Raspberry flavoured M&Ms?? Where?

Adorable Owl cupcakes, Cakelaw. I would never have the patience to make such cuties:)

I didn't know about your fascination with owls. I went to an auction a few weeks ago where there were thousands and thousands of owl collectibles. I truly never saw so many in my life. The woman had collected them for 85 years!!! Since I collect cookbooks, I didn't pay much attention to the owls but I did get one which I think is quite a treasure. It looks like it is carved from the Black Forest Wood from Germany and the eyes move and tell time. It's quite unique. If you want to see a picture of it just let me know:)

Thank you so much for sharing, I think a day to celebrate love is needed more now than ever. Happy Valentine's Day after:)

Hi Louise, raspberry M&Ms are in the US too, but they are dark chocolate while Aussie ones are milk chocolate. Would love to see your owl clock - it sounds very cool.

I will definitely be seeking them out in the stores here, Cakelaw, thanks!

I was looking for your email on your blog but I don't see it anywhere. If you want to send it to me I'll email you the pictures of the clock. It is very cool:) My email is acalenda {at} gmail {dot} com. Have a GREAT day!
